Have you ever found yourself in a room or space where there is a lot of background noise and someone is trying to tell you something but you cannot hear them?
You start to strain and usually you step closer to the person.
You may put your head to the side so that one ear in nearer their mouth so that you can filter out the other noises and hear what your friend is saying to you.
Or you may start to look intently at their mouth and attempt a bit of lip reading.
Most of the time you just get frustrated offer up some sign language that translates to "I can't hear you!"
That's a little bit like trying to hear spirit talking.
In a world of constant chatter you try to filter out the noise until you can hook into one voice.
Now sometimes that voice is nice and loud.
Sometimes its so quiet you can hardly hear it even if the whole world stood still.
Most often its just another one of the background noises that blend into all the others.
Unless you train yourself to become more perceptive and clear your mind and still the chatter you will never hear anything with clarity.
The strength of your ability to perceive these outside voices will depend on your level of attention.
Sometimes it can be an unconscious thing, you don't even have to try.
But when you are out ghost hunting you are consciously trying to focus on sounds and this can be difficult if you have had no experience of doing so.
When was the last time you just sat quietly without any device messaging or talking to you?
Just totally still.
If you practice mediation you may have quite a bit of stillness experience.
But we are also very much now programmed to be constantly bombarded with information that when that is taken away from us, even for 5 minutes, some people have a meltdown.
I sometimes see this when I ask people to just take part in a 5 minute silent vigil.
Some people just cant do it.
Not even for 5 minutes.
You cannot hear anything if you keep talking.
Its often nervous giggles or just feeling strange being asked to be quiet.
Its often step one though.
Just simple stillness.
A recording device is useful here too.
I'd like a dollar for every time I thought I heard something but when I replayed the recording there was nothing.
So does that mean that I did actually hear it?
Or not?
Was it my subconscious reaching out with a word or a noise?
Could it be that people do hear spirits and ghosts and we tend to dismiss it because we cant hear it?
After all isn't that how mediums work?
It is all so very complicated.
What can help strengthen your sense of hearing?
Try some listening exercises - like trying to make out one voice in a room filled with loads of voices.
Or listening to the TV when its turning down very low so that you have to really concentrate.
Maybe listening to a conversation and repeating it to someone else who can check you.
Also try meditation to clear the mind - if the mind is full of chatter it will not hear whats going on outside itself clearly.
