The Charles Bridge connects one side of the city of Prague in the Czech republic, to the other, and has stood through floods, war, religious upheavals and the metamorphosis of the city.
It is a walk that is taken by thousands of tourists every year and it is a walk I will be doing later this year with my travel buddy, Anne Rzechowicz, when we head on an escorted ghost tour hosted by Dave Schrader.
I am looking forward to this, even though I had no plans on going at all, but after seeing the itinerary Anne booked the tour with her husband, and told me that I have to come. We are going to an Ossuary, which is a church decorated with bleached and carved human bones!
Those crazy Europeans!
Oh, girlfriend you had to twist my arm!
As the bridge sees a constant stream of people on it from dawn till late at night I really don't know how I will go sensing anything at all. Way too crowded!
But, I still I await the experience of rubbing one special statue for good luck. It's tradition to do so.
It is one of the 30 statues that hang over the bridge's pedestrian walkway and a few have eyes that seem to follow you as you walk by.
These statues are not the originals by the way. Those are in a local Museum. These are replicas, but, really, who cares.
One famous ghost that hangs around this bridge is that of John of Nepomuk who was martyred because he would not tell the king the confessions he had been told by the Queen of Bohemia.
The king chucked a tanty and condemned John (now a Saint) to death and he was thrown into the river from the bridge.
Understandably St John is the patron saint of confessors and bridges.
Apparently there are many ghosts associated with this bridge although I think those who dare walk on it in the wee hours of the morning would be the only lucky ones to witness such apparitions!
Many a decapitated head would have been seen at one time as it was also a place of terrifying punishment. Gee...gives sightseeing a very different slant doesn't it!
Also you might catch a glimpse of a headless horseman ( looking for his head I suppose) and the Devil himself.
I'll be taking my camera just in case!
