How Do I protect Myself against a Ghost Attack - Part 1

I'm considering a deeper look into this topic of protection on paranormal investigations in this blog post.

Of course, I am only expressing my humble opinion here as someone who has been in the 'spooky' business for 25 years and has spent most of that time trying to get in contact with spirits.

So if you want to delve into how to protect yourself when going ghost hunting, go for it.
But don't fear what may not happen before you even start.
You are not likely to get attacked by some horrible spirit on your first ghost walk or ghost hunt!

This post has a few analogies - it's the only way I can explain things simply.
So stay with me...

You may have spent your whole life never having heard a voice from outside of yourself, never felt a poke or prod when no one is there, never been aware of outside energy forces - just gone on your merry old way, oblivious, and not wanting to really think about ghosts, nor they about you.
And that's perfectly OK.

Then all of a sudden, just because you find yourself on a ghost tour and you feel you are going to be attacked by some demonic force waiting specifically for you to arrive.
You - yes you.
They are waiting for you!
Truly - they are not.

You are as unlikely to have something happen to you as anyone else on your tour or investigation. don't freak yourself out of what could be a great eye opening experience.

Now - why MIGHT you have something happen?

Much more reasonable is the explanation that you are focusing on the fact that you will be in an environment where maybe, just maybe, your innate abilities will be turned on - or you will tune in to something that you feel slightly frightened. Maybe you think that if they get a grip on you you will open a vortex to all the ghosts that ever lived and you will turn into the next John Edwards?

Also, there will be people around you who are specifically crossing that dark line between the living and the dead. Your environment will be open to those in the spirit world reaching out to make contact with those who are specifically listening at that moment. They will be using devices that will be allowing them, allegedly, to connect with the dead.

And what if you hear something?

What if you SEE something?

That might blow your view of what you believe in or don't believe in!
That may ask you to alter your perception and maybe open up an area of yourself that you have not wanted to.

So firstly, before we even go to protecting ourselves from what may be OUT THERE, let's ask the question of of why do you want to expose yourself to the experience?

Is it because you just want a fright?
Then you don't need to use protection at all.
You want to feel the fear!
Stop reading.
Just go and enjoy the experience.
Although there is more chance of you getting a fright by sitting on your lounge in a dark room at 3 am watching the newest horror movie.

If you are serious...read on!

Protection doesn't come with an 'optional extras' clause that says:
*Do you want FULL protection? Yes or No.
*Do you want protection against demons, only but want a really really good scare? Yes or No.
*Do you want protection against just nasty black swirly energy but want to see a nice shiny angelic ghost? Yes or No?
* Do you want to only see only light beings, angels, higher spirit guides but nothing else? Yes or No?

Oh, that would be so EASY!
And here is the corker - if you BELIEVE that to be so, then it IS!
It is totally about your belief.
I hear this all of the time - it's usually starts with "a medium once told me..."
"a pastor once told me......" etc etc.

That's how we all learn. Someone once had to tell you something that you took on board and believed.

To me, though, that's not how ghostly encounters work.

oh oh...here comes another analogy!

When you go to the supermarket, you are in with everyone else.
You can't make up your mind that you won't go down the aisle that has the child abuser picking out his/her breakfast cereal because you don't want to be near him/her.
If you want cereal too, then you have to wait until he/she isn't there or you have to go down the aisle and face the fear.

And...how do you know he/she is a child abuser? Is it written on their forehead?

Can you tell from where you are standing?

For most people you will be standing next to a child abuser, or a domestic violence perpetrator or worse, every time you go shopping for your weekly groceries.

Can you make them not be there just because you are there?
No - you can't.

You either don't ever go shopping or get your shopping delivered to your home and then the delivery guy might just be a closet perpetrator.

To me it's the same when you tap into the spirit world, when you go ghost hunting, paranormal investigating, use a ouija board etc.

You just never know what you are going to connect with and to feel that you have the power to stop that randomness of certain energies being around you is something that requires a bit more than an occasional smudge.

It is something that professional investigators, ghost hunters and anyone working in the spiritual realms thinks of every day. It's a constant process which in itself creates a greater connection to that world because we are actively focusing on it.

They, and that includes me, should be spending time engaging with their psychic sides and building a strong internal sense of who they are and where their strengths lie and also more importantly where their weaknesses lie.

Protection is built up over time if it is to be something that you can depend upon.

Secondly your success will also depend on what your belief system is currently and what is was in your family of origin.

If you were raised in a family that was very religious and believed in the devil - you would have been taught the basic tenets that spoke of not being tempted to the darker side of life and dabbling in the dark arts - in which case you will have a huge dilemma when ghost hunting.

There will be a part of your psyche that will always be telling you that what you are doing may well put you at risk of being being taken over by evil energies.

What then happens to atheists?
Do they still believe that protection is required?
What about those that don't believe in ghosts and are bought along as sidekicks for their spouse or girlfriend/boyfriend?

I see this all the time at ghost tours - I always ask the question, "Who is really only here because their partner has dragged them along and they don't really believe?

If they do not believe in ghosts then the likelihood is that they will also poo poo the idea of protection.
Protection against what? they will say.

And the likelihood of them having an experience will be far less than anyone who is a believer.

They don't believe - they won't be tuned in to seeing anything.
They won't be open to feeling anything or hearing anything.
They don't want to - they are closed off which closes everything, all psychic connections.

In one respect they already have an internalised protection system working very well for them - denial.

And that does not mean that they are wrong BTW - it is what it is.
I don't believe in angels ( shock horror) and I would say there will be quite a few of you reading this that do.
Therefore I do not invoke them, they are not a part of my life. I get on quite well without them. I do not believe they can hurt me, nor help me.

Same for people who don't believe in ghosts.

In the end in most cases, not all, but most of the time, what you don't believe in cannot hurt you and what you do believe in can hurt you but also can protect you.

Belief and awareness are the two most important things when it comes to self protection.

Now, awareness!

Awareness is as vital in our everyday lives as it is if you choose to walk within and amongst the spirit realms.

Here's your second analogy -

One person will be aware of what is around them and see the hole in the middle of the road ahead and another will walk straight into it, saying, "I didn't see it".

You aren't assured to always see every 'hole' - but being more aware and open to what is all around you will make that hole come into your view of vision more often and then you can decide to avoid it, jump it, or jump into it.

Maybe you can explore the hole - see if it is deep or dark?

Maybe it's not as bad as you thought it was going to be and maybe you can just step over it - or maybe there is a flower growing inside the hole that you would have missed in you didn't stop to look into it.

So before we turn to outside protection devices, prayer, smudge etc..let's look at our internal awareness and what we are open to see and feel or closed off to any why.

Complicated?

Yes it is.

Never doubt that this is complicated stuff.

Diary of a Ghost Hunter - The Wallacia Hotel

We were given the opportunity of staying overnight at the Wallachia Hotel in Western Sydney. The hotelwas officially opened on December 3rd 1937. During the Second World War the hotel was used as the Army headquarters for radiopyhysics. I had never been to the Wallacia Hotel before, but, my ghost hunting gal pal Anne, had been there about 5 years ago with a group of Paranormal Investigators that she was working with at the time. We arrived and we were greeted by Craig, the night manager, who welcomed us with open arms.  Craig recognised Anne from the last time she had visited.  Anne asked whether any spooky things had been happening over the last few years. Craig said that he always thought that there was something a little bit weird going on late at night. Over the last few months everything had changed as the Hotel had been very much affected by the COVID lock downs This was a huge hotel with quite an interesting history even though in the whole scheme of things the hotel was only

Lemon Tree Passage Ghost - Local legend is alive and well

Lemon Tree Passage  is a suburb of the Port Stephens local government area in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia, located at the end of the Tilligerry Peninsula and surrounded by the waters of beautiful Port Stephens .  Ever since I can remember there have been a few urban legends about a stretch of highway named Lemon Tree Passage Road. The story begins when a motor bike rider and his pillion passenger died after colliding with a four wheel drive killing both. This seems to be the source of the ghostly lights and apparition. These sort of events don't stay quiet in small townships. Stories spread fast often not ending up like they started. Every so often this urban legend makes a comeback with a number to people tempting fate and poking the ghost rider.             A memorial to Dale Dickens on the Lemon Tree Passage Road / Pic: Robert Mckell Source:The Daily Telegraph The  Lemon Tree Passage ghost  first made headlines in 2010 after drivers cau

The Ghosts of Prince Henry Hospital and Little Bay

I am a ghost hunter. I explore and research and love to find myself being excited by stories of ghosts and haunted sights. Each story has its place in our collective consciousness and deserves to be heard and felt. Prince Henry Hospital, although long closed, remains a place that is greatly loved by so many nurses and patients and is now run by volunteers who keep its history alive. I began my involvement here abut three years ago when I was asked by Oz Para Tech (www.ozparatech.com) to join them in a public demonstration of ghost hunting for one of their open days. Let me share some history first..   This is a brief history of the Coast Hospital in relation to it being a hospital devoted to infectious diseases.  It was established to deal with a growing epidemic of smallpox in Sydney on September 5, 1881, and the site of Little Bay was chosen because of it's isolation from Sydney's population, its sweeping coastal view
