I am a ghost hunter.
I am a paranormal investigator, researcher and seeker of experiences.
The views in this blog post are my own and I do suggest that it may be a mere starting point for your own explorations into these diverse and extraordinary fields.
Most of my private investigations happen during the day.
Why?
I prefer to stay safe and as I have dodgy eye sight I like to get a good look at what is around me.
When I take the public ghost hunting it is ALWAYS at night, because that is what they expect.
It's what you see in the movies and on TV.
You don't see paranormal investigations during the day.
The truth as I know it, is that it does not matter whether it is day time or night time - if there is ghostly activity to be had on a site or in a house, it will be there any time night or day.
In fact, if you ask most people who have their own personal experiences you will get a whole lot of different times given for the activity to occur.
People will say it can happen at 3am in the morning, 5pm in the afternoon.
People see ghosts at day break or sunset.
They may experience ghosts while taking a shower, shaving, sleep, eating, sitting watching TV, outside and inside.
To be at the right place and at the right time is just about impossible for a repeat performance of the ghostly activity.
My preference is always during day light hours because I need to see the space I am exploring in detail. I need to hear the story of what is happening from the people involved and get them to show me EXACTLY where the activity has happened.
This will show me the condition of the space, whether there are electrical wires, water pipes, air conditioning systems, power boxes, is the floor even, are there external and environmental conditions that will effect the site that I need to notice.
To a ghost hunter, these things may not be important - after all you are looking for a ghost.
But, to an investigator...you are looking at all potential reasons why what is happening is creating spooky behaviour.
Why do people believe that ghostly activity only happens at night?
Oh and THEY DO!!
Maybe it's because of the stories most people tell.
Of course, again we have to say that it is the influence of television and movies.
People want the scare - they want to be in places where their emotions are raised and they can be entertained.
The ghosts sometimes seem like a secondary thing - as long as they can feel a fright and go away saying, "OH MY GOD, I WAS SO SCARED"....then things are all OK.
For ghost hunters, they will say it better to investigate at night because it's quieter.
People have come home and are not on the road.
There is far noise outside - animals are sleeping, birds are not making excessive noise, dogs are not barking.
Ghost hunters can use their gadgets in dark spaces - the gadgets have loads of lights that can really only be seen properly when it is dark - makes sense.
There is less to drag the mind and eyes away from the focus needed when it is dark and the lights are out.
You can also see subtle changes against a dark backdrop.
I was an anxious child and did suffer from night terrors.
I am not a fan of pitch black areas that are enclosed.
Since my childhood years of seeing things in the dark - I have never been comfortable with total darkness.
Most recently I remember being placed into a below ground space in Edinburgh (a tunnel tour) where the tour guide had primed all of us with stories of the ghosts and poltergeists that linger in the dark there.
That didn't bother me.
But the moment the door was closed and we all placed ourselves in positions for interaction - I found myself up against the wall in the corner and behind everyone else.
The pitch blackness of that space was awful.
The silence and anticipation of the first person to scream was not something I relished.
I didn't see the sense - other than it was the thrill that these people were seeking - and they got it.
The screams came - and I could not wait to get out of there.
So back to ghost hunting during the day or night?
My personal preference - day time investigation first.
Then I would try to be there at the time when most activity occurs.
Often, for me, if there is a ghost or energetic form I will feel it day or night.
If I don't feel anything it doesn't mean that there is nothing there - it just wasn't there when I was there so that's when we go back with equipment to try and get more.
For my tour participants....I will continue to provide experiences after dark, because that's just how you like it you strange, strange people!!!
