Where these tours good?
Hell yes!
The Greyfriar's Tour was booked with City of the Dead Tours who have been running the tours at Greyfriar's for years.
We had a wonderful guide named Charlie and she was an anatomist plus guide plus worked for the NHS plus another two jobs and worked on these tours most nights.
She was amazing and managed to tell us the truth behind many of the myths and legends about Greyfriar's Kirkyard and the legend of Bloody McKenzie and also served up a good dose of spookiness to make us feel uneasy at the same time.
Why some people tell tales on these tours always amazes me because fact is always stranger than fiction!
This time a treat for me as we actually went inside the Covenanter's Prison which houses the Black Mausoleum which is the haunting ground of the ghost of McKenzie where over 140 encounters have been recorded - from scratches to fainting to smells to burning sensations.
I actually had smells.
Whilst in there I smelt a really weird smell of a mixture of wet soil and decay.
This came in and went on two occasions and had to make it's way through my mask, which we wore whilst in the confined space.
This was pretty awesome.
Weird but awesome.
This morning I was feeling like death warmed up so I took a bunch of cold and flu tablets and vitamins and we headed off on a 3 km walk to the Royal Mile.
This might not sound far to you - but I was feely unwell and remember over the last few months I had been so busy that I rarely had time to do any walking!!
It was torture.
We did get there in plenty of time to go onto our booked Mary King's Close tour.
This tour takes you to the underground world of the life under the Royal Mile in the are of the great plagues.
If you are in Edinburgh do yourself a favour and do this tour - this was my second time and I am still wondering how in the hell did people live down their?
In many cases they did not live there long - it was so over crowded and filthy that many deaths occurred. It is still astounding that anyone survived!!
The guides are wonderful and really put so much effort into their story telling.
The fact that so many children died of terrible plagues in terrible living conditions broke my heart.
Of course we were told about the story of Mary the ghost and shown the toys that people have left for her - to know the truth about this go to our podcast.
We really enjoyed this tour and they were pushing tours through at a rate of one every half hour.
You never saw the other groups, only a little peak of them walking in the distance. This is a slick operation and worth the money you pay.
Do it.
We walked a little more down the Royal Mile and took advantage of the sunshine.
A miracle in itself since the forecast was for showers.
But the Aussie Naughty Aunties made sure there was plenty of blue in the sky.
And we also had a photo with the most pierced woman on Earth who has a stall on the Mile and does psychic readings.
awesome, hope she never goes through an mri
